Project Overview

When mobility challenges from multiple sclerosis began affecting daily life, this Lake Jeanette couple knew their primary bathroom needed to change.

They didn’t want a clinical-looking renovation. They wanted a space that felt beautiful, calming, and comfortable — while allowing both spouses to use it safely and independently.

The goal was clear:

Design an accessible bathroom that preserves dignity, protects independence, and still feels like home.

The Challenge

The existing bathroom included:

  • A large jetted tub that was difficult to enter
  • An enclosed water closet that restricted movement
  • A shower that was not accessible
  • Limited maneuvering space for future wheelchair access

Safety was becoming a concern. Daily routines were becoming more difficult. At the same time, the couple wanted to be thoughtful about resale value and maintain a refined aesthetic.

Accessibility was necessary — but they did not want the space to feel institutional.

The Vision

Create an ADA-informed, residentially styled bathroom that:

  • Supports mobility challenges
  • Works comfortably for both spouses
  • Allows future wheelchair access
  • Preserves a warm, sophisticated aesthetic
  • Incorporates the homeowner’s love of emerald green

This was about more than fixtures. It was about partnership, dignity, and planning ahead.

The Solution

Curbless Shower with Thoughtful Engineering

  • Expanded the shower footprint within the room
  • Removed the enclosed water closet walls to create a comfortable circulation corridor
  • Utilized vacated tub space to provide maneuvering room for side-entry access
  • Installed a 36-inch wide, doorless, curbless entry

To achieve a true zero-threshold entry without sacrificing proper drainage:

  • The subfloor was dropped between the joists
  • This allowed the shower floor to sit flush with the bathroom floor at the entry
  • Adequate slope was maintained to shed water toward the drain

The result: seamless entry without raised thresholds — safer, cleaner, and more elegant.

Accessibility Features (Beautifully Integrated)

  • Fold-down teak shower seat
  • Secure grab bars in shower and toilet areas
  • Rain shower head for the standing spouse
  • Handheld shower positioned for seated use
  • Dual niches positioned at appropriate heights for each spouse

Every detail was positioned intentionally — functional, but never clinical.

Replacing the Jetted Tub

  • Removed outdated jetted tub
  • Installed easy-entry soaking tub

The new tub offers relaxation without the risk of the former unit.

Water Closet Reconfiguration

  • Removed walls of enclosed water closet
  • Added grab bar
  • Reused existing chair-height toilet (in excellent condition)

Removing the walls significantly improved accessibility and spatial flow.

Smart Budget Strategy

To manage costs responsibly:

  • Reused existing vanity cabinets
  • Reused nearly new chair-height toilet

While maintaining budget discipline, key visual upgrades were introduced:

  • Replaced cultured marble countertop with granite
  • Installed stylish rectangular undermount sinks
  • Replaced plate glass mirror with framed mirrors

The result feels elevated — not economical.

Materials & Aesthetic

  • Large-format tile flooring with slip-resistant matte finish
  • Emerald green wall tile and decor accents
  • Plans for future complementary wallpaper feature wall behind vanity

The space feels rich and sophisticated — not clinical.

Special Features

  • Zero-threshold curbless shower
  • Dropped subfloor engineering for flush entry
  • 36-inch doorless shower opening
  • Fold-down teak seat
  • Rain + handheld dual shower system
  • Secure grab bars
  • Granite countertop with undermount sinks
  • Easy-entry soaking tub
  • Circulation space for wheelchair planning
  • Emerald green design accents

The Result

The bathroom now feels open, safe, and beautiful.

Both spouses can use it comfortably. The space accommodates mobility challenges today and anticipates future needs — without sacrificing style.

Most importantly, it provides peace of mind.

Accessibility does not have to look clinical.

This Lake Jeanette remodel proves it can feel refined, warm, and thoughtfully designed.
